Sword x Staff gives free-to-play players plenty of resources, but it also gives them far more upgrade systems than they can realistically push at the same time. Skills, Fantomons, Relics, equipment, Companions, Cart production, dungeons, and seasonal progression all compete for attention.
The easiest way to fall behind is not necessarily making one terrible decision. It is spreading resources across too many systems without getting meaningful progress from any of them. A good F2P approach is therefore about identifying the upgrades that either improve long-term progression or help you reach stronger zones and better rewards sooner.
Push Adventure Whenever You Can
Adventure progression should remain one of your main priorities whenever you log in.
If you previously stopped because of a difficult encounter, try it again after upgrading equipment, improving skills, changing your build, or gaining a few Account Levels. Reaching a new zone can unlock stronger equipment, additional systems, and better farming opportunities, so breaking through a progression wall earlier can improve everything that follows.
This is also where consumable buffs and temporary bonuses become useful. There is little value in stockpiling every temporary resource indefinitely if using one lets you clear an encounter that opens an entire new section of progression.
The same logic applies to speed-ups. Saving them is generally sensible, but not when using one immediately would let you reach a new Account Level or zone several hours earlier. Consider what that accelerated unlock gives you rather than looking only at the amount of time skipped.
Build a Daily Routine Around Limited Resources
Once the initial flood of unlocks slows down, most F2P progression comes from consistently clearing limited activities.
Start by collecting your Cart resources and make sure Stamina does not remain capped for long periods. Stamina is used to farm materials such as Rolla, Raw Ore, Battle Essence, and Chrono Sand, so letting regeneration stop is effectively giving up resources.
Daily Dungeons should also remain part of your routine. They are one of the main sources of equipment and Gear Shards, with two free entries available each day. Runs can also be stored up to a limit, which gives you some flexibility when a stronger dungeon tier is about to unlock.
Guild activities are another source of regular progress. Joining an active Guild as soon as the feature becomes available gives access to donations, Guild Boss rewards, passive farming, shop currency, and Guild talents that provide account-wide bonuses.
Finally, make use of gathering attempts, Friendship rewards, daily quizzes, and other time-limited activities as they become available. None of these feels transformative alone, but skipping several of them repeatedly creates a large resource gap over the course of a season.
Spend Dawnium to Remove Bottlenecks
Dawnium can be used almost everywhere, which makes it easy to waste.
For F2P players, the best purchases are generally those that either provide strong recurring value or remove an immediate progression bottleneck. Daily Dungeon refreshes are one of the more reliable examples. The first additional entries cost 100 and 150 Dawnium, and paying for them can be worthwhile once dungeon gear becomes an important part of your progression.
Shop refreshes can also be useful, but there is little reason to refresh endlessly during the early game. A conservative approach is better while your Dawnium income is still limited.
Try to avoid spending large amounts of Dawnium simply to accelerate the Standard skill banner. Sword x Staff already provides a large number of free pulls, and early skills remain available as you progress. Later class tiers also introduce additional skill pools, so burning premium currency to force Tier 1 progression is rarely the best long-term trade.
The important part is not to hoard Dawnium without a reason either. If spending some allows you to cross a meaningful progression threshold today, that can produce more value than leaving thousands untouched for weeks.
Upgrade the Cart With a Clear Priority
The Cart is one of the main sources of passive resources, so its production levels deserve regular investment.
Wood and Stone should usually receive the highest priority because they are required for many other upgrades. Keeping their production ahead of the rest makes it easier to continue improving the Cart itself.
Chrono Sand and Raw Ore come next. Both remain useful throughout progression and feed important systems such as Relics and equipment upgrades.
Rolla is still valuable, but how heavily you invest in its production depends on how aggressively you use shops and other Rolla sinks.
Battle Essence and Basic Treats can generally sit lower because they have more alternative sources and are less likely to become the main bottleneck.
Goddess Statues are closely tied to this system. Activating them increases your Blessing Level, which raises the production cap of Cart resources. When exploring a new region, activating available Goddess Statues is therefore more than a completion objective; it directly affects your passive economy.
Keep Relic Upgrades Focused
Relics are one of the better long-term systems for F2P accounts because their bonuses are collection-based.
You do not need to equip every Relic to benefit from its passive stats, and completing sets unlocks additional bonuses. Duplicates can also improve those effects further, allowing Relic progress to continue contributing even as other systems change between seasons.
The main mistake is spreading upgrade materials too widely.
Relic Slots use Chrono Sand and Rolla, and matching an element’s slots allows other Relics from that element to benefit through Resonance. Pick the element that best supports your build and concentrate your upgrades there before trying to improve everything equally.
It is still worth completing accessible lower-rarity collections as you obtain them, but your actual upgrade materials should have a clear destination.
For physical-heavy builds, elemental choices are slightly less restrictive because Physical Mastery receives small benefits from Elemental Affinity in general. Element-focused classes should be much more deliberate about which element receives their resources.
Upgrade Gear Without Chasing Perfection
Equipment provides a major portion of your Total Power, but early gear changes too quickly to justify obsessing over perfect pieces.
During the first regions, using whatever provides the better overall stats and Total Power is usually enough. Stronger zones and dungeons quickly introduce higher-level drops, making early optimization less important than simply continuing progression.
Fortunately, Sword x Staff upgrades equipment slots rather than individual items. Replacing a sword does not erase the levels invested into the weapon slot, which means Raw Ore spent on slot progression still carries forward.
Prioritize the slots most important to your class and upgrade in useful milestones rather than trying to keep every slot perfectly equal.
Duelists and Sorcerers generally benefit most from prioritizing the Weapon, followed by the Off-hand and Shoes. Knights and Sages have different defensive priorities, but the same general rule applies: invest where the stats contribute most to your actual role.
Use the Auction House as Part of Your Economy
Gathering is not only useful for crafting.
F2P players should check whether ingredients and valuable equipment pieces are worth more when sold through the Auction House. Other players may pay well for useful gear rolls or materials they do not want to gather themselves.
That does not mean you should sell everything or completely ignore cooking. Temporary food buffs can help push difficult encounters, while permanent dishes offer lasting stat increases.
The better rule is to avoid automatically consuming every resource you obtain. If an ingredient is valuable to other players and you do not currently need the dish it produces, selling it may provide Dawnium that can be invested elsewhere.
Likewise, equipment with desirable stats can sometimes be worth considerably more to another player than it is to your own account.
Don’t Spread Skill and Companion Resources Too Thin
Sword x Staff gives players a large number of Techniques and Charms, but only a small number can be equipped at once.
Choose the active skills and passives that define your current build and concentrate upgrades there. Improving every Technique because you might use it eventually delays the skills that are actually helping you clear content now.
The same principle applies to Companions. Different Companions provide different passive bonuses through Affinity, and several important stat increases appear at specific Affinity milestones.
Rather than raising every Companion evenly, pick a few whose stats benefit your class and push them toward those milestones first. For DPS builds, Crit-oriented Companions are particularly attractive, while defensive characters can favor Block and survivability bonuses.
Remember That Seasons Change the Value of Upgrades
Sword x Staff uses seasonal progression, and some power above the current seasonal threshold is reduced when a new season begins.
Account Level, Skills, Fantomons, some Relic Slot levels, and Gear Slot upgrades can be brought back toward the previous seasonal floor when they exceed the threshold. This might make temporary progression seem pointless, but that is not the case.
Seasonal power still lets you clear harder content, improve your Seasonal Score, and earn Primostars that can later be exchanged for permanent bonuses.
At the same time, several important things do carry forward. Skills and their duplicates remain acquired, Fantomon copies and Aptitudes remain, Relics and their duplicates remain, Companion Affinity is preserved, and many one-time progression bonuses are permanent.
For F2P players, the goal is therefore not to avoid seasonal investment. It is to understand which upgrades are temporary power and which ones continue improving the account long after the current season ends.
Common F2P Mistakes to Avoid
One of the biggest mistakes is trying to progress every system equally. A little Dawnium in Skills, a little in Relics, a few Fantomon pulls, scattered equipment upgrades, and constant shop refreshes can leave you with nothing meaningfully developed.
It is also worth avoiding excessive Standard banner spending, letting Stamina sit capped, ignoring Guild activities, and upgrading skills you never actually equip.
The opposite extreme can be harmful as well. Hoarding every currency indefinitely means passing up upgrades that could unlock better content and improve your resource generation today.
Spend with a purpose. If an investment gives permanent progress, strengthens your core build, or helps you reach a better farming zone, it is usually doing something useful.
Free-to-play progression in Sword x Staff is less about finding one secret source of currency and more about consistently putting limited resources into the systems that give something back.
Push Adventure whenever your build improves, activate Goddess Statues to expand Cart production, keep Stamina and Daily Dungeon entries moving, and participate in Guild activities. Use Dawnium selectively instead of throwing it at every available gacha or refresh, and prioritize long-term systems such as focused Relic collections, important equipment slots, and the Skills and Companions your build actually uses.
Sword x Staff provides enough resources for F2P players to keep progressing, but those resources become much more effective when every upgrade has a reason behind it. With the tips and tricks outlined in this guide, you can speed up your progression and avoid wasting resources.
