In Dynasty Warriors: Overlords, your resources are quite limited, and your success in both PvE and PvP depends on how efficiently you use them. This also applies to officer selection: wasting resources on inefficient units can hinder or significantly complicate your game progression. To help you make the right choices, we’ve compiled this character ranking list.
We used criteria such as musou damage, clear speed, hero bond synergy, and utility in compiling our list. Note that our selections are valid as of August 2026: future patches or updates may alter power balances and the meta.

Detailed S-Tier Breakdown
- Zhao Yun: This is the officer you should choose as your primary DPS. Moreover, it’s quite beginner-friendly. Its attacks cover wide angles, and its musou skill provides very long invincibility durations.
- Xiahou Dun: Currently the best unit in the game for the melee DPS role. It has very high stagger resistance and can deal incredible damage with its frontal cone. It will be one of the most useful officers for timed boss challenges.
- Sun Ce & Taishi Ci: Both are very good at mobility and, for the same reason, are very useful in PvP battles. You can quickly close the distance between yourself and your opponent and use counters much more efficiently.
| REROLL STRATEGY FOR BEGINNERS | If you’re new to the game, stop rerolling immediately if you obtain Zhao Yun or Xiahou Dun. Zhuge Liang, Ma Chao, or Sun Ce are also acceptable reroll outcomes initially. Don’t continue rerolling hoping to obtain Lu Bu or Guan Yu. Both require significant investment to be truly effective, and if you’re new, you won’t have the resources to strengthen them for a very long time. Furthermore, neither provides a significant advantage for the early game: they are end-game units. |
Best Roster Building Strategy
- Choose 1 main DPS and allocate 80% of your resources to it. Zhao Yun is the best option for this, while Xiahou Dun is the best alternative.
- Focus on weapons, not character levels, during upgrades. Weapon enhancements provide more effective results on the battlefield than character levels.
- The easiest and cheapest way to upgrade B-Tier characters to A-Tier is to use General Stones. When you equip these materials in their slots, they become at least as powerful as A-Tier units.
- Remember that you can obtain team-wide stat bonuses if you deploy units with historical ties to each other. Check out the table below for more information about this.
