Dynasty Warriors: Overlords is an action RPG game that offers the famous “1 vs 1.000” battles. Officially licensed by Koei Tecmo, it combines real-time & combo-based battles with a fluid RPG progression system that includes kingdom management. With the information and tips here, you can progress much faster and more efficiently in the game.
Core Gameplay Loop of Dynasty Warriors: Overlords
The gameplay loop essentially consists of the following cycles:
- Kingdom / Base Building: You manage a city and need to regularly upgrade its buildings. This allows you to gain passive resource production, officer training slots, and higher level caps. If you notice you cannot increase your level further, first check the level of the relevant building: you may have reached the cap.
- Gacha Officer Recruitment: You manage a squad of 3 officers on the battlefield, but you can only directly control one primary officer. If you set up your squad correctly, you can gain synergies, ultimate attacks, and various bonuses. New officers are obtained by summoning (via the gacha system).
- Hack-and-Slash Battles: Combat is extremely dynamic and based on light/heavy attacks triggered by N+C combinations. Once you master it, you can take down dozens of enemies with a single blow.

Main progression is tied to clearing story chapters. In return, you earn currency, XP, and materials. You can use these to upgrade your officers and your kingdom.
Your Roadmap for the First 5 Days
To make the most of your first five days in the game, follow this roadmap:
| DAY 1 | Keep pushing through campaign chapters until you reach at least level 20. Clearing the main story quests should be your primary goal. This will allow you to unlock game modes like Recruitment (Gacha), City Management, Weapon Forging, and Co-Op Raids, and enjoy more content. |
| DAY 2 | Dedicate today to mastering the Cooldown-Free Combo mechanics. Dynasty Warriors: Overlords combat is built around N+C strings. N stands for “normal attack,” and C stands for “charge attack.” For example, N1 + C is a basic launch attack. N2 + C or N3 + C allows you to perform an AoE attack. Try to learn all the combos. |
| DAY 3 | On day three, focus on base building. Main Hall, Military Barracks, and Workshop should be the first buildings you upgrade. This will increase your stamina cap, allow you to start earning passive silver and XP, and raise the level cap of your office roster. |
| DAY 4 | Choose an SSR general and start investing solely on it. As a general rule, you should use 70% of your upgrade materials for a single unit. The more overpowered, the better. Check out the tier list below to get an idea about the best units. |
| DAY 5 | Continue by completing daily quests and collecting event milestone rewards. After logging in for two more days, you will receive weapon blueprints and SSR shards as part of the first week rewards. Use these to boost your progress. |
Key Tips & Progression Strategies
Match Squad Synergies & Bond Buffs. The quickest and easiest way to increase your Attack and Defense power is to deploy officers from the same faction. In this case, you get various stat increases and bonuses applied to the entire squad. But you can take this even further: pairing certain iconic canonical partners, such as Guan Yu + Zhang Fei, Zhou Yu + Xiao Qiao, allows you to unlock dual ultimate attacks. These are especially effective against boss officers.

Weapon Forging & Gem Socketing. The most important thing affecting an officer’s individual attack stat and combo modifiers is the weapons they equip. Focus on unlocking higher tier blueprints and, as soon as you do, use the Forge to make the necessary adjustments to your equipment. If you match Fire, Ice, Lightning, and Poison gem attributes, you will start dealing more damage to bosses’ armor (specific armor types).
Stamina & Ingot Economy. Use the free ingots you obtain 2-3 times a day to refill your stamina. Don’t rely solely on luck when summoning. Save your ingots and use them in time-limited SSR hero banner events. During these events, your chances of summoning certain characters are much higher.

Officer Tier List & Faction Synergies
Dynasty Warriors: Overlords features four factions: Shu, Wei, Wu, and Jin. Officers belong to one of these factions, and deploying officers from the same faction grants squad-wise bonuses via synergies. Let’s take a look at the faction list first.
| FACTION | SPECIALIZATION | SYNERGY EFFECT |
| Shu (Green) | Single-Target Burst & Mobility | ATK & CRIT DMG increase |
| Wei (Blue) | Shields & CC | Damage Mitigation & Defense Penetration increase |
| Wu (Red) | DoT & AoE | ATK Speed & Fire Damage increase |
| Jin (Purple) | Shield Breaking & Debuffs | Armor Shred & Skill CD Reduction increase |
The officers in the game have three rarity levels: R, SR, and SSR. They can also take on one of three different roles: Power (Single-Target Burst), Agility (Crowd Control/AoE), and Support/Control (Debuffs, Buffs, Shields). As of August 2026, the officer tier list is as follows:
| S-TIER OFFICERS (CURRENT META) | ||
| NAME | RARITY | ROLE |
| Lu Bu | SSR | Power |
| Zhao Yun | SSR | Agility |
| Guan Yu | SSR | Power |
| Guo Jia | SSR | Control |
| A-TIER OFFICERS | ||
| NAME | RARITY | ROLE |
| Cao Cao | SSR | Control |
| Zhou Yu | SSR | Agility |
| Zhang Fei | SSR | Power |
| Diaochan | SSR | Support |
| Xiahou Dun | SSR | Power |
| B-TIER OFFICERS | ||
| NAME | RARITY | ROLE |
| Sun Shangxiang | SR | Agility |
| Guan Ping | SR | Power |
| Xu Chu | SR | Power |
| Pang Tong | SR | Control |
Optimal Squad Formations
It’s best to use different formations for different purposes. In other words, you can’t create one “perfect” squad for everything in the game: you should try to create ideal synergies for each mode or scenario. In this context, the ideal squad formations for three different scenarios might be:
| GOAL/FOCUS | FORMATION |
| Pure DPS | Zhao Yun + Guan Yu + Zhang Fei |
| AoE Speed Clear | Zhou Yu + Lu Xun + Xiao Qiao |
| PvP & Raids | Lu Bu + Guo Jia + Diaochan |
By following this 5-day roadmap, prioritizing your base building, and investing heavily in a single high-tier SSR officer, you’ll build a strong foundation to dominate the battlefield in Dynasty Warriors: Overlords.
