FGO Challenge Quest Guide: Boss Mechanics, 3-Turn Clears & F2P Teams

Challenge Quests (CQs) are among the toughest fights in Fate/Grand Order (FGO). Unlike ordinary farming stages, these battles are designed around mechanics that can punish even a powerful roster if you ignore the boss’s break effects, defensive buffs, or NP timing.

To be successful, you need to plan the fight before you start it. You must know when a boss will refill its NP gauge, what happens when each HP bar breaks, which defensive effects can be bypassed, and whether your team can recover from the resulting disruption.

This FGO Challenge Quest guide covers the core CQ mechanics, then walks through three demanding boss encounters (Morgan, Oberon, and Caster Artoria) with both 3-turn burst strategies and lower-cost F2P approaches.

How Challenge Quests Work

Before worrying about your Servant lineup, understand the rules that make CQs different from normal quests.

AP Cost and Revival Restrictions

Challenge Quests cost 5 AP and do not allow a normal revival after your party is defeated. You cannot use Saint Quartz or Command Seals to revive the entire party. Command Seals can still be spent individually, including to fully restore a Servant’s HP or refill their NP gauge. That can be useful as an emergency recovery tool when a run is close to succeeding.

Break Gauges Reset the Current HP Bar

Multi-bar bosses don’t work like a single enormous health pool. When you deplete a bar, any damage beyond the remaining HP is lost rather than transferred to the next bar. This makes damage timing important. Avoid wasting a large NP or chain on a boss when a smaller attack would have been enough to break the current bar.

Breaking a Bar Can Trigger New Mechanics

The most dangerous part of many CQs is what happens after a bar disappears. A boss may respond by gaining Invincibility, charging its NP, removing your buffs, draining NP gauge, or applying another persistent effect. Your team should be built around the boss’s break sequence, not just its starting form.

Morgan is especially dangerous because her Berserker class gives her broad offensive reach while her mechanics create additional pressure through Curse, NP disruption, and break-triggered buffs. Her fight becomes progressively more dangerous as you remove each HP bar, so a strategy that works during the opening phase may fail afterward.

Morgan’s Most Dangerous Attacks

• Her Noble Phantasm, Lord Camelot, deals heavy AoE damage and can reduce the party’s Overcharge level while adding more Curse pressure.
• Her Charisma of Longing skill provides an ATK increase while also advancing her NP gauge, meaning she can reach her next NP much faster than you may expect.
• Curse is the other major concern. Several stacks can accumulate over the course of the battle, eventually dealing thousands of damage to your party every turn.

3-Turn Morgan Strategy

For a fast clear, use a single-target Foreigner or another specialized anti-Berserker damage dealer capable of delivering high burst damage. Potential choices include Mysterious Heroine XX, Abigail Williams, Enkidu, Chloe von Einzbern, or Scáthach, depending on your available roster and the exact damage bonuses of the encounter.

Recommended Setup

• Main DPS: Mysterious Heroine XX / Abigail Williams / Enkidu
• Supports: Double Altria Caster for Arts or Koyanskaya of Light + Oberon for Buster
• Craft Essence: Black Grail or an event damage CE
• Mystic Code: Chaldea Combat Uniform

Turn 1

Use your DPS buffs and the required support skills, then fire the first NP to remove Morgan’s opening HP bar. The goal is to make the first break happen immediately rather than allowing Morgan several turns to build Curse stacks or charge her NP.

Turn 2

The first break drains 20% NP gauge from frontline Servants, so restore the DPS gauge before attempting the second bar. If Morgan’s defensive effects require it, prepare a way to bypass Invincibility. Recharge the attacker and use a second NP to trigger Break 2.

Turn 3

Break 2 immediately gives Morgan a full NP gauge and three turns of Invincibility, making the final sequence the most dangerous part of the run. Use Order Change to bring Oberon onto the field when appropriate, activate his major NP-damage support, and use your remaining defensive tools to survive Morgan’s NP. Finish with the DPS NP once her defensive mechanics have been handled.

The exact card order may vary, but the principle is straightforward: force each break quickly, account for the NP drain, and reserve your strongest burst for the final bar.

F2P Morgan Strategy

The goal is still the same: you need to combine defensive skills, taunts, cleansing, and repeated survival tools so your primary attacker gets enough time to work. We recommend using this team:

• DPS: Cu Chulainn or Robin Hood
• Frontline Support: Mash Kyrielight
• Friend Support: Altria Caster
• Backline Utility: David and/or Georgios

Oberon Challenge Quest Guide

Oberon’s fight puts a different type of pressure on your team. Instead of simply overwhelming you with raw damage, he combines Sleep, defensive effects, NP acceleration, and anti-burst mechanics that can disrupt a carefully planned rotation. His Pretender class also influences which attackers are best suited to the matchup.

• Sleep. A sleeping Servant cannot act normally and becomes more vulnerable to incoming attacks. That means an important DPS being hit by Sleep at the wrong moment can destroy an otherwise perfect burst sequence. 
• His Noble Phantasm. Lie Rhyme Goodfellow deals AoE damage while applying Pierce Invincibility, Sleep, and offensive-buff removal. That combination makes conventional defensive stacking unreliable. 

3-Turn Oberon Strategy

Use an Alter Ego or Knight-class single-target damage dealer, preferably one capable of dealing with Oberon’s defensive effects. Possible attackers include Mecha Eli-chan, Meltryllis, Bazett, Enkidu, or Archuria, depending on your roster.

Recommended Setup

• DPS: Single-target Alter Ego or Knight-class attacker
• Supports: Double Altria Caster or Double Koyanskaya of Light
• Backline: Oberon
• Mystic Code: Chaldea Combat Uniform

Turn 1

Apply your main offensive buffs and NP batteries, then use the DPS NP to break the first bar. Don’t waste your premium defensive abilities yet. The first goal is simply to establish the burst cycle.

Turn 2

Oberon’s first break gives him three-hit Invincibility, so normal NP damage may be wasted. Use a Pierce Invincibility effect when available, recharge your attacker, and remove the second bar while keeping the next turn in mind.

Turn 3

Bring Oberon forward with Order Change before the boss can cripple your main attacker with its Sleep-related mechanics. Use Oberon’s major damage-support skills and finish with your DPS NP to clear the final bar.

The key difference from Morgan is that Oberon’s fight is less forgiving if you ignore the defensive sequence. Pierce Invincibility and Sleep management need to be planned before the second break occurs.

F2P Oberon Strategy

For players without a premium burst setup, Mecha Eli-chan makes an excellent low-cost damage option because of her Alter Ego class. Recommended team is: 

• Frontline: Mecha Eli-chan or Robin Hood / Mash Kyrielight / Friend Altria Caster
• Backline: David / Santa Nightingale / Cu Chulainn

Caster Artoria Challenge Quest Guide

The Caster Artoria encounter is built around defensive buffs, NP acceleration, and repeated protection effects. Rather than trying to overpower her defenses immediately, you need to remove her defensive layers at the correct moment. Because she is a Caster, Riders and Alter Egos are the most suitable damage-dealing options.

Caster Artoria’s Most Dangerous Attack: Solemn Defense 

One of the central mechanics of the encounter is Solemn Defense. Trying to solve it with a single powerful NP isn’t enough. You need to remove the defensive stacks before committing your main burst. This makes command-card selection very important.

3-Turn Caster Artoria Strategy

A single-target Rider with strong Buster or Quick damage is a good fit because the boss’s Arts resistance makes an Arts-centric approach less attractive. Suggested attackers include Rider Kintoki, Ozymandias, Quetzalcoatl, or Anne Bonny & Mary Read.

Recommended Setup

• DPS: Single-target Rider
• Supports: Double Koyanskaya of Light
• Mystic Code: Decisive Battle Chaldea Uniform

Turn 1

Apply the necessary Koyanskaya buffs and fire your Rider’s NP to remove the first HP bar. The important thing is to reach the first break without unnecessarily consuming the defensive tools you’ll need later.

Turn 2

After Break 1, Caster Artoria receives three-hit Solemn Defense. Don’t immediately fire another NP into the protection. Instead, use two appropriate Quick or Buster face cards to consume the defensive hits, then place the Rider’s NP as the third card so the main attack connects after the protection has been removed. This card sequencing is the centerpiece of the three-turn strategy.

Turn 3

Use Order Change to bring Oberon into the frontline, apply his major damage-support skills, and launch the final NP against the last HP bar. Because the second break also fills Caster Artoria’s NP gauge, the final turn should be treated as a race rather than an opportunity to extend the fight.

F2P Caster Artoria Strategy

You can also approach this encounter with inexpensive Rider options. Recommended team is: 

• DPS: Ushiwakamaru or Rider Kintoki
• Defensive Support: Mash Kyrielight
• Friend Support: Koyanskaya of Light or Merlin
• Backline: Georgios / Alexander / Cu Chulainn

The hardest FGO Challenge Quests reward preparation more than brute force. Multi-bar bosses are designed to punish players who ignore what happens after a break, while effects such as Curse, Sleep, NP drains, Invincibility, and Buff Removal Resistance can completely disrupt an otherwise powerful team.

Whether you’re facing Morgan, Oberon, Caster Artoria, or another high-difficulty CQ boss, the winning formula is the same: learn the mechanics first, build your team around them, and only then worry about maximizing damage.
