It is time for our weekly Chinese indie games showcase! While Source Contract is developed by a new team, it has already secured a publisher in China, Wanda Cinemas Games. If you did not know, Wanda Group is the parent company which made USD 31 billion of revenues in 2018, and Wanda Cinemas is the subsidiary which decided to open a gaming branch. It has been around for years now, but has not manage to challenge heavyweights like Tencent or NetEase. A little more detail, Alibaba (around USD 480 billion market cap) has a games division too, but it has also failed to capture any market thus far.
Ok, back to the game Source Contract. Perhaps spurred by the global success of Honkai Impact, it seems that smaller studios in China is trying to cash in on anime-style 3D action RPG titles, with previous indie examples including Punishing: Gray Raven and VGAME. Oddly, most of these games remain in China where there hasn’t been a huge market for such a genre. Source Contract differs from the previous 2 with its classic fantasy settings and feels much more enjoyable especially during combat. There is not much to highlight, so take a look at the gameplay video! Perhaps someone should bring these games overseas…
