The jump into Chapter 14 changes how you need to approach Azur Lane. Fleets that could comfortably brute-force earlier campaign stages can struggle badly once you reach Chapters 14, 15, and 16, especially on Lethal difficulty.
These chapters combine powerful enemy fleets with demanding environmental mechanics, strict Anti-Air requirements, submarine threats, and increasingly punishing boss encounters. Clearing them consistently with Auto-Battle requires more than simply filling your fleets with strong ships: you need the right roles, equipment, and fleet-specific strategies.
In this guide, we will cover the major mechanics in Chapters 14–16, along with recommended Mob and Boss fleets designed for difficult Auto-Battle clears.
Endgame Auto-Battle Fundamentals
Before focusing on individual chapters, make sure your account can handle the basic demands of late-game campaign stages.
Build a Durable Mob Fleet
Your Mob Fleet will fight repeatedly, so sustain is essential. A dedicated healer such as Unicorn (Retrofit) or Perseus can restore your ships between engagements and help prevent attrition from ending the run early. The goal isn’t simply to maximize damage. Your Mob Fleet needs enough durability to survive several battles without constant manual intervention. Check our Azur Lane tier list to get some ideas.
Build the Boss Fleet for Burst Damage
The Boss Fleet has a different job. Instead of optimizing for repeated encounters, concentrate on single-target damage and survivability so you can bring down the flagship before its attacks overwhelm your fleet. Strong boss fleets typically combine high-end damage dealers with defensive Vanguard ships capable of staying alive throughout the encounter.
Use Submarines at the Right Time
Submarines can provide a huge damage boost, but poor timing can waste their contribution. For Auto-Battle setups, use a well-developed Wolfpack of U-boats or powerful UR submarines and deploy them roughly 20–40 seconds into the boss fight. This prevents them from entering too early, giving your fleet time to establish the fight while reducing the risk of your submarines surfacing and being destroyed before delivering their full damage.
Don’t Ignore Meowfficers
Level 30 Meowfficers can provide meaningful improvements to an endgame fleet. Talents such as Mountain and Flame are particularly useful because they can improve damage mitigation and offensive performance. At this stage, small bonuses can add up, especially when you’re trying to make an Auto-Battle fleet consistent rather than merely capable of winning a battle once.
Chapter 14: Surviving the Night Battle
Chapter 14 introduces a major shift in how combat works by adding Concealment and Night Battle mechanics. Your Main Fleet remains concealed until it fires, while enemy submarines and ramming boats create additional threats for the Vanguard.
Key Mechanics
Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) and Evasion become particularly important. Enemy ships can remain difficult to detect, while Flares help reveal hidden targets and make them easier to engage.
How to Build for Chapter 14
Give the Hedgehog ASW mortar to your Vanguard ship with the strongest ASW capabilities, typically a Destroyer. Your Mob Fleet should also include Battleships equipped with fast-firing secondary guns. These are important for destroying suicide boats before they can reach your Main Fleet.
Recommended Auto Mob Fleet
- Main Fleet: Musashi / Unicorn (Retrofit) / Volga or Aquila
- Vanguard: Plymouth / Shimakaze / Laffey II
This combination prioritizes sustained damage, healing, strong Vanguard performance, and the ASW needed to handle Chapter 14’s hidden threats.
Recommended Auto Boss Fleet
- Main Fleet: Bismarck Zwei / New Jersey / Vanguard or Implacable
- Vanguard: Ägir / Helena (Retrofit) / Anchorage
This setup combines heavy boss damage with defensive Vanguard ships that can survive prolonged engagements.
Chapter 15: Air Superiority Becomes Critical
Chapter 15 shifts much of the difficulty toward air combat. Special Aviation Fleets and powerful enemy airstrikes can overwhelm a fleet very quickly if your Anti-Air setup isn’t strong enough.
Key Mechanics
You need high Airspace Control to reduce the danger posed by enemy aircraft. ASW also remains relevant in Chapters 15-3 and 15-4, so you can’t completely abandon submarine countermeasures.
Build Around Aircraft Carriers
Carrier-heavy Main Fleets are particularly effective here. At the same time, your Vanguard needs strong Anti-Air capabilities. If your fleet repeatedly dies to aircraft, improving the actual AA guns should be the priority. Aim for +13 AA equipment rather than simply adding AA Radars to ships with otherwise mediocre Anti-Air performance.
Recommended Auto Mob Fleet
- Main Fleet: Musashi / Unicorn (Retrofit) / Independence (Retrofit)
- Vanguard: Guam or Cheshire / Shimanto / Laffey II
For Chapters 15-3 and 15-4, equip the Hedgehog on the appropriate ASW ship to maintain submarine coverage.
Recommended Auto Boss Fleet
- Main Fleet: Yorktown II / Hakuryuu / Implacable
- Vanguard: Brest / San Diego (Retrofit) / Unzen
This lineup emphasizes carrier-based damage alongside strong Anti-Air support and a resilient frontline.
Lethal Auto-Battle Tip
Be careful when engaging Large Main Fleets with a Mob Fleet that has already exhausted its ammunition. These encounters are extremely punishing, and fighting them without the damage advantage provided by sufficient ammunition can turn an otherwise successful sortie into an immediate loss.
Chapter 16: The Ultimate Endgame Test
Chapter 16 combines many of the mechanics that made the previous chapters difficult. Expect heavy shelling, large numbers of enemy aircraft, and another variation of the Concealment system. This is where fleet optimization becomes particularly important.
Understanding Poor Visibility
Both your fleet and the enemy begin with Concealed status. Your Vanguard’s Evasion affects the size of your concealment zone, while defeating surface fleets helps recover your concealment gauge. As a result, Vanguard survivability and Evasion aren’t just defensive stats, they directly influence how your fleet interacts with the stage’s mechanics.
Use the Submarine Support Fleet
Chapter 16 introduces a special opening boss that can be engaged using three submarines for a cost of 10 Oil. Defeating this opening target grants the Inevitable Clash buff. The effect changes the sortie’s concealment behavior according to how much damage your submarines dealt to the opening boss, making this opening encounter an important part of the overall strategy.
Recommended Auto Mob Fleet
- Main Fleet: Alsace / Unicorn (Retrofit) / Volga
- Vanguard: Guam / Shimanto / Laffey II
This fleet provides sustain, strong Anti-Air and frontline performance, and the defensive stability needed for repeated Auto-Battle engagements.
Recommended Auto Boss Fleet
- Main Fleet: Bismarck Zwei or Musashi / Admiral Nakhimov / Implacable
- Vanguard: Ägir / Plymouth / Helena (Retrofit)
The setup focuses on combining heavy Main Fleet damage with a Vanguard capable of surviving the extended pressure of Chapter 16’s hardest encounters.
How to Prepare for Lethal Auto-Battle
Trying to Auto-Battle these stages with an underdeveloped account is usually more frustrating than productive. A few preparation milestones can make a major difference.
Level Your Core Ships
Aim to have your primary ships around Level 120–125 before seriously attempting Lethal clears. Higher levels improve both damage and survivability, which becomes increasingly important in Chapters 14–16.
Upgrade Your Best Equipment
Your fleet’s equipment can matter as much as the ships themselves. Work toward strong +13 gear, especially for your most important damage, Anti-Air, and defensive slots. Don’t spread rare enhancement materials across your entire dock. Concentrate them on the equipment that will actually be used by your endgame fleets.
Prepare Specialized Fleets
Don’t assume one fleet can handle everything. Mob and Boss fleets have different requirements, and Chapters 14–16 add additional demands such as ASW and Anti-Air. Building separate fleets for sustain, boss burst, Anti-Air, and submarine coverage will produce much more consistent results.

Chapters 14, 15, and 16 are designed to push Azur Lane’s fleet-building systems to their limits. Lethal Auto-Battle becomes much more demanding once Concealment, Night Battle, powerful aircraft, and submarine threats are combined with stronger enemy fleets.
A dependable setup starts with the fundamentals: a sustainable Mob Fleet, a high-damage Boss Fleet, properly timed submarines, strong Meowfficers, and fully developed equipment. From there, adjust your fleets to the chapter’s specific mechanics rather than relying on raw rarity alone.
Don’t rush these stages. Bringing Level 120–125 ships and heavily enhanced +13 equipment gives you a much stronger foundation for consistent clears and makes the leap into the game’s most demanding campaign content considerably more manageable.
