Winning in Marvel Strike Force PvP isn’t simply about bringing your strongest five characters into every battle. Modern defenses are built around speed manipulation, revives, battlefield effects, sustain, exposed targets, charges, and other mechanics designed to punish straightforward attacks.
That makes “counter-picking” one of the most important skills to learn. The right offensive team can dismantle a seemingly unbeatable defense, while the wrong matchup can burn one of your best squads for very little return.
This Marvel Strike Force PvP counter guide focuses on the most important principles for Cosmic Crucible and Alliance War, including how to approach defensive teams, when to save your strongest characters, and how to build attacks around the room’s rules.
Cosmic Crucible Counter Guide
Cosmic Crucible rewards efficient roster management. You have a limited number of attacks, and wasting a premium team on a defense that could have been handled by a cheaper counter can leave you without the tools needed for the final rooms.
Before choosing a team, check both the enemy composition and the current room rules. A modifier that strengthens a particular origin, trait, or ability can completely change the value of a normally reliable counter.
Annihilators and Knull Defenses
Teams featuring Annihilators and Knull can be difficult to break because they combine exceptional durability with strong offensive pressure. Knull can create additional problems through disruptive effects, while the supporting characters make it dangerous to rely on attrition alone.
The safest approach is generally to use a high-sustain offensive squad or a team capable of overwhelming the defense before it establishes momentum. Characters such as Mephisto can be very valuable in these situations because of their ability to improve the team’s long-term fighting potential. Rather than attempting to grind through the defense with a fragile attack squad, look for ways to survive the opening fight and then control the battle.
Nightstalkers
Nightstalker defenses are built around disruption and punishing enemy teams that fail to remove key effects quickly. Characters such as Blade and Oath can create pressure through mechanics that interfere with healing, buffs, and normal defensive play.
A useful counter strategy is to bring burst-heavy Bio or Mutant combinations capable of eliminating priority targets before the defensive buffs become stronger. Cleanse and debuff removal are also valuable because allowing negative effects to accumulate can make the fight much harder than its initial power level suggests.

Saving Premium Characters for Difficult Rooms
Don’t automatically throw Apocalypse, Super-Skrull, or Mephisto into the first difficult-looking room you encounter. These characters can turn troublesome matchups into manageable ones, but their real value comes from being available when an unusually strong defense or awkward room modifier appears.
Consider the entire Crucible map before committing one of your most powerful plug-and-play options. A slightly less efficient attack in an early room can be worthwhile if it preserves your best counter for a later defense.
Alliance War Counter Guide
Alliance War requires a different mindset from Cosmic Crucible. The available defenses, room bonuses, and strategic objectives can change the value of individual counters, so a team that’s excellent in one War setup may be mediocre in another. The most important principle is to evaluate the enemy’s core mechanic first, then choose an offensive team that directly attacks it.
Countering Absolute A-Force
Absolute A-Force is one of the more demanding modern defenses because of the interaction between Kahhori and Ms. Marvel (Classic). Kahhori can manipulate Speed Bar and apply Exposed, while Ms. Marvel (Classic) provides significant protection and can clear negative effects and heal allies under the right conditions.
A direct mirror matchup can work, but you can also use a carefully constructed offensive team designed around controlling the enemy’s opening sequence. The key is to prevent the defense from establishing its protection cycle. Focus on disrupting its most important support characters before the team becomes difficult to dismantle.
Dealing With Kahhori Cores
When Kahhori is paired with powerful characters from outside the standard Absolute A-Force lineup, her value can increase considerably. Speed control becomes extremely important in these encounters. Look for offensive teams that can manipulate turn order, remove defensive effects, or eliminate an important character before Kahhori’s mechanics begin chaining together.
A well-timed Exposed effect can also deny enemy advantages such as Revives, Stealth, or other defensive mechanics, so don’t treat it as merely a damage booster.

Breaking Orchis Defenses
Orchis defenses are designed to become more dangerous if they’re allowed to establish their defensive engine. Characters such as Sentinel and Nimrod can generate barriers and sustain the team while gradually making the fight harder. The best counter approach is to apply early control and focused damage. Don’t spread your attacks across the entire enemy team just because several characters are vulnerable.
Instead, identify the character responsible for the defensive loop and prevent it from reaching its strongest state. Teams capable of flipping defensive buffs, bypassing protection, or controlling key Tech characters are particularly valuable here.
Orchis With Mephisto
Adding Mephisto to an Orchis defense changes the matchup considerably. Your offensive team now has to deal with the original defensive engine while also accounting for Mephisto’s ability to influence the battle.
In these situations, premium counters such as Brimstone, Undying, or other specialized Mephisto answers can be worth more than a conventional Orchis counter. The priority is to remove the most dangerous source of sustain before attempting to clean up the remainder.
Common PvP Counter Principles
The exact counter teams will change over time, but the fundamentals remain surprisingly consistent.
Remove the Engine, Not the Tank
The highest-power character on the enemy team isn’t necessarily your first target. Many modern teams revolve around one character creating speed, barriers, healing, charges, or another advantage for everyone else. Eliminating that team engine can cause the rest of the lineup to collapse much faster.
Control the Opening Turns
Turn order can determine the outcome of a PvP battle before the first full rotation has even finished. Speed Bar manipulation, Ability Block, Stuns, Exposed effects, and similar mechanics can stop a defense from executing its intended opening sequence. When choosing a counter, ask yourself what the enemy team wants to do on its first few turns and whether your attack lineup can prevent it.
Don’t Feed Defensive Passives
Some characters become stronger when attacked under particular conditions. Ms. Marvel (Classic), for example, can use Charges to absorb pressure while providing defensive benefits to her team. Blindly attacking a character because it looks vulnerable can therefore make the battle harder. Read the active buffs, Charges, and defensive states before committing your strongest attacks.
Bring the Right Amount of Power
More power isn’t always better. Using an extremely expensive or overqualified team against a weak defense may secure the room, but it also consumes characters that could have handled a stronger matchup elsewhere. Strong roster management is about finding the cheapest reliable counter, not simply the strongest possible counter.

Best Counter Strategy by Defensive Threat
| THREAT | WHAT TO PRIORITIZE | COUNTER APPROACH |
| Annihilators / Knull | Sustain and burst damage | Survive the opening sequence, then overwhelm the core before the defense snowballs. |
| Nightstalkers | Debuff removal and burst | Prevent Blade and Oath from establishing their control and damage-over-time effects. |
| Absolute A-Force | Speed control and focused damage | Disrupt Kahhori and Ms. Marvel (Classic) before their defensive cycle is established. |
| Kahhori Hybrid Teams | Turn manipulation | Use Speed Bar control and targeted attacks to prevent Exposed and related mechanics from dominating the fight. |
| Orchis | Control and buff manipulation | Shut down Sentinel or Nimrod before barriers and sustain become overwhelming. |
| Orchis + Mephisto | Premium sustain counters | Remove the primary defensive engine before allowing the team to scale. |
| Annihilators / Knull | Sustain and burst damage | Survive the opening sequence, then overwhelm the core before the defense snowballs. |
F2P and Mid-Roster Players: Counter Smarter
You don’t need every newest character to contribute meaningfully in PvP. Players with smaller rosters should focus on preserving their premium counters, understanding common mechanics, and using specialized mid-tier teams where possible. A narrowly targeted counter can often outperform a much stronger general-purpose squad if the matchup is favorable.
The same principle applies to gear and investment. Rather than trying to build every character to the maximum, prioritize the teams that repeatedly provide useful counters across multiple game modes.

The key to winning Cosmic Crucible and Alliance War isn’t memorizing one permanent list of five-character counters. The meta changes too quickly for that approach to remain reliable. Instead, learn to recognize the mechanics that make a defense dangerous.
Annihilators and Knull demand strong sustain and damage, Nightstalkers punish teams that can’t manage their debuffs, Absolute A-Force relies heavily on Kahhori and Ms. Marvel (Classic), and Orchis becomes increasingly difficult if Sentinel and Nimrod are allowed to establish their defensive engine. A good counter guide tells you which team to use. A great PvP player understands why that counter works and knows when a different approach is safer.
