Webzen has shared the first images and gameplay details for PROJECT D1, a strategy RPG based on the Korean webtoon Tyrant of the Tower Defense Game. The August announcement introduces its visual direction, setting, and main systems after the project was first disclosed in December 2025. However, the publisher has yet to confirm when the game will launch or which platforms will support it.
PROJECT D1 Release Date and Platform Details
PROJECT D1 remains in development at Webzen Crevix, while Webzen will publish the game and manage its service in South Korea and overseas markets. Webzen plans to reveal more information and begin preparations for service during the second half of 2026. The company will announce the release schedule once development and business preparations reach the required stage.
A 2027 target has appeared in secondary reports, although Webzen’s official announcement does not confirm a launch year. Therefore, that window should be treated as provisional until the publisher provides a date. Platform details also remain unavailable, so Android, iOS, PC, and console editions have yet to be confirmed. There are no official store pages or pre-registration campaigns at this stage.
A Strategy RPG Based on a Popular Webtoon
The game adapts Tyrant of the Tower Defense Game, which began as a web novel before its webtoon version arrived through Naver Webtoon in 2022. Its story follows a player who completes the impossible difficulty of a game called Protect the Empire. He then wakes up inside that world as Prince Ash and discovers that every command can cost the lives of real people.
That premise leads to the fortress city of Crossroad, where Ash and his allies must survive attacks from dangerous enemies. The first PROJECT D1 images show a meeting between major characters, a combat scene, and a view of the city. These locations connect the adaptation to the original story while introducing the game’s tactical structure.
Webzen describes PROJECT D1 as a command strategy RPG. Its systems translate exploration, fortress defense, and territory management into party building, tactical operations, strategic progression, and command-based battles. Earlier development information also described a hybrid structure that combines tower defense with dungeon offense.
Diorama Pixel Art Built With Unreal Engine 5
PROJECT D1 uses what Webzen calls a diorama pixel-art style. The team combines 2D pixel artwork with 3D staging, while Unreal Engine 5 supports the environments and visual effects. Artists then add hand-finished pixel details, which give characters and locations a retro appearance within deeper three-dimensional scenes.
Webzen Crevix is handling development under CEO Kim Dong-hyun. The studio began recruiting for combat, systems, client and server development, concept art, effects, backgrounds, interface design, and other roles after Webzen secured the adaptation rights from Naver Webtoon. The project also forms part of Webzen’s effort to expand its portfolio beyond the MMORPG genre.
