First announced by Leyou Technologies Holdings in 2018 and later by Amazon Games in 2019, the ambitious new MMORPG based on The Lord of the Rings has now been canceled. According to a report by Bloomberg, the cancellation was due to Tencent buying over Leyou in December 2020, and subsequently could not negotiate new terms with partner Amazon Games.
Other than negotiation disputes between Tencent and Amazon, there weren’t other reasons provided for the cancellation. Yet another setback for Amazon’s gaming ambitions, the team which has worked on the game for the past 2 years will be moved to other projects. It will definitely impact the overall marketing campaign for Amazon’s upcoming The Lord of the Rings TV series.
