First announced last month and launched a couple of weeks back in Japan, Star Smash is a new mobile game from Disney and Japanese developer XFLAG. The game’s genre is a mix of tennis + pinball with RPG elements supplied in the form of manga storylines, which is definitely a unique combination that works well. Borrowing the powers of iconic Disney characters such as The Incredibles, The Little Mermaid, Cinderella and more, this ought to be a smash hit of a mobile launch.
Unfortunately, the Google Play score by Japanese gamers is at a lowly 3.7 with “just” over 100,000 downloads. While these numbers are deemed superficial by many, it does paint a picture that even with a Disney IP, games are not automatically good (cue Marvel’s Avengers). While we do love the gameplay, we feel that using Disney characters as skill cards rather than playable characters with unique abilities is a huge waste of the IP. No overseas launch is currently set for Star Smash.
