Released last year in China, Swordsman X is technically the first wuxia battle royale game ever launched for the PC system. Since late July, it has sold over 500,000 copies, which isn’t bad for a country where Free-to-Play games are the norm. Recently, developer Dream Game Studio announced the mobile version, Swordsman X Mobile, and will enter testing soon. While not sharing the same server as the PC version, Swordsman X Mobile retains much of the Chinese wuxia aesthetics and features, including the 100-player battlefield.
Dream Game Studio is a Chinese indie studio which started with less than 5 people in 2017, and has since grown to 30-strong today. Buy-to-Play games is still considered a risk in China where players are used to Free-to-Play games with options to buy power, but the market has grown significantly since 2017. The plan is to still sell Swordsman X Mobile for a one-off price, but that has yet to be confirmed. The English PC version of the game has actually been on Steam since July 2018 in Early Access! Stay tuned for more updates.
