PlanetSide 2, published by The9 in China, recently launched an eye-catching campaign to remind gamers of its existence. The9, if you remember, is also the big boss of North American developer Red 5 Studios (of Firefall fame). PlanetSide 2 China entered its Closed Beta last week, and the daring campaign immediately became the talk of the gaming community, both bad and good. I am still not sure of the logic behind this type of sexy campaign in the usually strict China, but it is still extremely popular with games companies.
If you recognized, 1 of the models is Wai Wai (below), who got famous (or infamous) back at ChinaJoy 2012 for her portrayal of Saint Seiya’s Athena. While outsiders will have the thought that Wai Wai is some random stripper looking for fame, she has always maintained her innocence on social media as an ordinary model. Do give her the benefit of the doubt…
It seems more or less confirmed that Didier Drogba has been dropped as the game’s spokesperson in China. He was reportedly paid millions to endorse PlanetSide 2 last year, but after reading several soccer websites (I am a soccer fan), he is apparently looking to quit the Far East and head back to Europe. I do wonder if those are millions wasted…
