Korean gaming giant first signed a publishing deal (regions unknown) with VA Games last year for its maiden mobile title, Outerplane. VA Games is a new studio founded just in 2019 by a small team of developers who worked on Closers, the PC anime action game, together for about 5 years. The main guy had experience in NCsoft and XLGAMES as well! VA Games has expanded gradually, with 40 employees now working on Outerplane.
According to the team, the story for Outerplane revolves around the current hot anime theme, isekai, where normal human beings are summoned to an alternate fantasy world. They claimed that other than Rise of the Shield Hero and Re:Zero, there aren’t many isekai-themed mobile games in the market. The overall atmosphere for Outerplane, though designed in anime style, will be “different” than the comedic KonoSuba.
In the game, there are characters not only summoned from the present “real” world, but also those who are summoned from the future and even outer space! VA Games confirmed that they will introduce characters with vastly different concepts. This will allow players to colelct and build unique teams to explore and adventure in the yet-unnamed game world.
Outerplane will use the classic turn-based combat system. Since the core team worked on Closers, they want to add an extra layer of “action” to battles as well. An example is the aerial combo system. It’s turn-based, but depending on certain conditions, players can launch enemies into the air and do a series of combo damage. The game will also feature a “skill chain system” in which team members can sequentially attack when the gauges are full.
The skill chain system is an important system that not only makes a for good graphical effects showcase, but also destroys boss monsters’ “rampage and death patterns.” I am guessing the developer means attack patterns, and players can cast skills which will distrupt powerful boss attacks. Outerplane is being developed using Unity engine in full 3D animation. Stay tuned for more updates!
