Yes, you did not read that wrongly. Despite being a gacha-heavy mobile game, Metal Slug: Commander is indeed a sequel to all those arcade and console shooters which you probably played. The storyline in Metal Slug: Commander takes place after the war, with more factions and new characters introduced into the mix. I am guessing some players will be disappointed with the genre change, but perhaps there will be a real shooter sequel if this game performs well.
Although developed by the China division of SNK, I can’t recall Metal Slug: Commander being launched anywhere else in Asia, be it China, Taiwan, South Korea, or Japan. The gameplay here is very simple, similar to games such as Dot Arena, Seven Knights etc. Basically, most of the manual actions take place outside battle (other than pressing ultimate skills), such as upgrading characters and strategizing them for team bonuses.
I am not going to sugar-coat it, Metal Slug: Commander is really monetized to the heavens, with advertisement for discount packs appearing whenever some milestone is achieved and more. And those gachas… Personally, I was a fan of Metal Slug, so I poured a couple of hundred into the game to show my support now that I am a working adult. But for most gamers during this challenging times, perhaps spending money on gacha is not the wisest choice…
