White Chord recently entered Closed Beta 2 in China, and the incredible anime-style design immediately caught my eyes. I have actually followed the game since it was announced by the indie studio, and waited till this current version before recording any gameplay footage. To summarize, the story of White Chord revolves around the power of music, and how enemies known as Noise Demons are breaking the barrier to enter this world.
There are 5 nations in White Chord, thought there is no immediate content based on this right now. Each character also belongs to 1 of 5 available positions on the battlefield. Before the start of each story chapter, players will form their teams and take on the various stages, with the choice of 1 out of 3 buffs to be chosen after each stage to carry over. However, players can only swap characters by restarting from the first stage, which is both a hindrance and a good strategic element of the game.
I almost forgot to talk about the skill-card battle system! I don’t see many mobile RPG titles using this system still, but I guess you could see it as something similar to Hearthstone or even Clash Royale, where casting the right card based on the amount of resources is key. Each character comes with 3 active skills. However, there is no deck-building or combo system in White Chord, something which might give it an extra dimension.
White Chord comes with the usual gacha system (though there is only 5x at max), character upgrades and the works, something which most mobile gamers should be familiar with. Overall, I am impressed by the quality of White Chord coming from an indie studio while remembering that it was not too long ago where China developers are just making counterfeit games based on Japanese anime franchises. I will give White Chord a try again during launch!
