While I am holding much positives for Final Fantasy XIV’s rebirth coming in a couple of months, I am not sure what Square Enix is doing now is to the best of the game’s interests. You see, with quite a couple of “big” MMO games out there plus a saturation of Free-to-Play titles, the latest trailer does not show much to convince new players to get hyped for the game. I am talking about non-Final Fantasy gamers, those who have yet to touch the Final Fantasy series.
From what I see, the new trailer is only catering for the franchise fans. Does the trailer show much? Well, fancy skills (Limit Break system), a few shots of towns, battles etc. This is the first trailer for the new version featuring the new polished game engine (the 2 before were CG trailers), and I doubt gamers will buy into graphics and a fancy system name nowadays. As I was typing this, I noticed the video’s comments, which exactly fits what I am talking about.
A bi-weekly developer’s diary starting now, lasting till beta in 3-4 months, will do wonders convincing gamers Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is worth a serious look. Don’t get me wrong, I will still get my copy, I am just worried about the game’s appeal to the masses. From the looks of it, Final Fantasy XIV will continue with a monthly payment model, which further adds a serious entry barrier.
