Over the year, there have been many reports about China gaming giant Tencent taking over Hong Kong-based games company Leyou Technologies, and it became official earlier today (24 Dec) at 9:00 AM HKT. Many might not know of Leyou which we have covered before. To summarize, Leyou is the owner of Canadian developer Digital Extremes (Warframe), while also developing online games based on Transformers and The Lord of the Rings. Tencent, using its subsidiary Image Frame Investment, completed the deal with no financial values announced.
Why did Tencent purchase a relatively unknown company? I doubt it is just for Warframe, perhaps more for the in-development projects with Tencent looking to invest more money overseas due to tightening laws imposed by the Chinese government. Leyou has quite a number of subsidiary studios as well. No financial value was announced, but we do know that all shares were bought over and Leyou was taken private following the deal (it was previously publicly-listed).
