You probably would have read about this game or seen the trailers I uploaded sometime back which bears close resemblance with Team Fortress 2. Leading the development of Final Combat, a China online shooter, is producer Troy Horton, who was involved in over 30 games including Tomb Raider.
This is also the same man who once claimed the Koreans have no clue how to make good FPS titles… Well, that’s what he said. Anyway, I managed to get into Closed Beta by luck (lucky draw, won a key at first try) and here are some videos of my first few games.
As you can see, newbies are limited to just 3 of the 5 characters at the start, while the overpowered flamethrower Clown and the big guy with the big Gatling gun are left to be unlocked at a higher level. I guess I am not bad for an amateur, seeing how much I do fail at online shooters (except against AI).
Most of the modes are pretty standard, including Capture the Flag, Team Demolition, Bomb Planting, Knife Fight and Free for All Survival mode. The one interesting mode is the Cart Defense mode, which I am sure is not something new, but it is still refreshing for me who seldom touches such games. As you can see, I had a blast in the few games I played.
From first impression and just a few hours of gameplay, Final Combat is not that bad as initially thought, and most importantly I had fun. Furthermore, it seems more characters and modes will be added in the near future.
But the lack of features such as better character and weapons customization and missing AI mode will be sorely missed for some. Back to reality, the online shooter genre is really still in its infant stage (yes, it just took off), hence it will be sometime before more advanced titles such as Warface hits the market.
