One of China’s online gaming powerhouses, Giant Interactive, has confirmed that they are in talks with Konami in acquiring the rights for the classic game, Contra, to be made into an online game. For most of the veteran gamers, including myself, Contra is one of the titles which really tested our skills with all those jumping, avoiding traps and impossibly tough alien bosses.
This information was leaked when one of Giant Interactive’s top executives supposedly let slip during a public speech, declaring that Contra Online will be a 2D side-scroller online title aimed at players around the age of 30.
After the leak, Giant Interactive has now officially declared (image below) that it has not not signed the IP rights for Contra yet, but is in active negotiations with Konami. This follows a chain of Asian MMO developers remaking classic titles into online games, including Dragon Ball (link), Rockman, Hello Kitty, Crayon Shin-chan (link) and the recent Power Rangers Online (link). Perfect World has also gotten the rights to develop Saint Seiya Online (link). Are you hyped for Contra Online?
