If you are an avid follower of my small blog or the Asian MMO industry, you would have heard about ArcheAge, one of the “Big 3” MMOs to scheduled to be released in Korea along with TERA and Blade & Soul this year. If you have not, ArcheAge is the first MMO from Korean developer, XL Games, founded by Jake Song, which in turn founded NCsoft’s Lineage… Well, you get the idea. Originally using CryEngine 2 to be developed, the game somehow found a space in the recent GDC 2011 CryEngine 3 video (02:04), showing upcoming games using the engine. You can read more about ArcheAge here.
If it is true, ArcheAge will not be the first MMO to switch from CryEngine 2 to CryEngine 3. Fellow MMO showcased in the video, Forged By Chaos, was the first MMO I know of to make the switch. Other than these 2 MMOs, there is Cabal II as well. The first Chinese orient styled MMO, which no game title was given, could be the one canned recently by Chinese developer, 9you. Well, this I am not sure. Below are 2 prior trailers for ArcheAge using CryEngine 2.
Not missing out on the upgrade party, Hangame’s upcoming oriental MMORPG, ASTA: The War of Winds and Tears will also be switching from CryEngine 2 to 3 as well. Wow, get ready to upgrade your engines, boys (and girls if there are any reading this)! Click here to find out more about ASTA. Below is a footage from last year’s G*Star 2010, supposedly still using CryEngine 2.
