Roughly translated as Tale of Gods, this upcoming MMO is from China developer, The9. If you have read various MMO websites focusing on the Asian market, you would have read that The9 has been on a rapid decline since losing the China publishing rights for Blizzard’s World of Warcraft to rival, Netease. The company currently has less than 1% of the MMO market share in China.
It didn’t help that other than World of Warcraft, the company did not have enough popular games to sustain their revenue. It was only then they decided to invest in various developers, most recently North America’s Red 5 Studios (maiden MMO, Firefall, announced recently).
Tale of Gods aim to weave a unique and engaging storyline based on the many folklore, myths and legends found in China. It will be one massive world, where various fantasy characters including gods, demons and humans will clash and whom players will get to meet. From what I know, there will be 8 clans (or races) to choose from, with the first 4 being listed as Sage (圣), Deity (仙), Buddha (佛) and Ghost (鬼). According to various critical analysts, this game, which has really garnered much fanfare since ChinaJoy 2010, will be the company’s make or break title. I can’t wait!
